For educators who choose tutoring as a profession. A rigorous, 90-credit PGCE built around the demands of one-to-one and small-group education.
Professional tutoring can involve far more than supplementary academic support. At Tutors International, the tutors we recruit may take responsibility for a child's entire education: designing and delivering curricula, assessing progress, mentoring students, working with parents and other professionals, and adapting education around international travel, elite sport, additional needs or changing family circumstances.
These are substantial educational roles requiring pedagogical expertise, professional judgement, adaptability and accountability. Yet while classroom teachers have long had recognised qualifications such as the PGCE, professional tutors have had no equivalent way to demonstrate their expertise.
The PGCE Tutoring, delivered by UWE Bristol and shaped with advisory input from Tutors International, begins to address that need.
This landmark 90-credit, practice-focused PGCE is built specifically around one-to-one and small-group tutoring, combining academic rigour with advanced tutor training, professional standards and substantial practical application.

Built around professional tutoring
The course develops your ability to understand individual learners, adapt teaching in real time and take responsibility for their progress. You'll develop expertise in evidence-informed pedagogy, inclusive practice, safeguarding and professional standards, alongside structured subject audit and reflection where appropriate.
A substantial Tutoring Practice module enables you to apply, evidence and critically reflect on your work with learners.
Delivered fully online over one academic year, the course allows you to develop your practice while continuing to tutor.
Who is it for?
The PGCE Tutoring is designed for new and experienced tutors, including established professional tutors, teachers moving into one-to-one education, and educators building careers in home education and personalised learning.
Tutors International has advocated for greater professional recognition within tutoring for many years. Our advisory input drew on more than 25 years of recruiting educators for demanding full-time tutoring roles around the world and understanding the breadth of expertise those positions require.
Professional tutoring has existed for generations, but the qualification infrastructure has not reflected the expertise and responsibility involved. This landmark PGCE begins to change that.
